Adverse Weather Strikes Record Levels of Property Insurance Claims
In recent years, the frequency and intensity of adverse weather events have surged, causing widespread destruction to homes and businesses. Severe flooding, violent storms, and other extreme weather occurrences have become increasingly common, leaving properties vulnerable to significant damage.

Rising Insurance Claims
The UK witnessed record-breaking adverse weather conditions in 2024, resulting in a significant surge in property damage claims. According to the latest industry data, published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), Insurers paid out a record £585 million for weather-related damage to people’s homes and possessions in 2024.
The record claims come following significant and consistent bad weather, including 12 named storms in the 2023/2024 storm season – the most named storms since 2015/2016.
Claims for damage to homes from windstorms, flooding and frozen pipes in 2024 surpassed the previous 2022 record for the same claim types by £77 million. The figure is also £127 million (28%) higher than the weather-related claims payouts for 2023.

The Impact of Unprecedented Weather Events
Climate change has been linked to a sharp increase in extreme weather events, and 2024 has been no exception. From devastating storms to prolonged flooding, adverse weather has left countless properties damaged and in need of urgent repair across the country.
One of the most significant storms last year was Storm Henk, which caused widespread disruption across the UK with powerful winds and heavy rainfall. The Met Office issued an amber wind warning, emphasising the seriousness of the situation. In response, the Environment Agency issued more than 120 flood warnings and nearly 200 flood alerts across the country.
This has meant homeowners and businesses must prioritise resilience strategies to safeguard their properties. This includes investing in weather resistant materials, improving drainage systems, and staying informed about risk mitigation techniques.
